Language on the System

The Language of the System is a mix of English, Russian, Mandarin, French, and Spanish, with English and Russian dominating. Given that much of the early System denizens spoke Russian or English due to the location of the early System hardware in the Sino-Russian Bloc and the clandestine operations of S-R Bloc operatives in the Western Federation, those slowly became the lingua franca of the common areas of the System, with enclaves speaking their own languages and striving to keep languages from phys-side alive in their own areas, if not on a larger scale.

The evolution of language sys-side is slower than it might otherwise be phys-side due to the lack of populations dying out. Much of the change comes from newer uploads bringing jargon and linguistic shifts with them from phys-side, leading to an averaging-out: new uploads learn some of the older ways of speaking while also dragging the older uploads forward with them.
