Prior to the advent of the System, the world had undergone several changes from the time of writing in the early 21st century.

In the mid 2000s, there were a series of unspecified calamitous events, though notable among them were a series of pandemics that led to several medical changes. There were also collapses of several portions of the American infrastructure — notably the power grid — leading to a weakening of state identity and an increase in regional identity (the Central Corridor, Cascadia, the West Coast, the Northeast, and so on).

Additionally, the world shifted toward federation, with the two largest federated powers being the Western Federation, consisting of the remnants of NATO and the EU, along with much of Central America and a portion of South America, Japan, and Northwest Africa; and the Sino-Russian Bloc, consisting of most of the countries Russia and Georgia in the east, China, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and North Korea. The minor federations consisted of the Northeast African Coaltion (NEAC), the African Coalition, the India-Southeast Asia Coalition (ISAC), the Southeast Asia and Pacifica Coalition (SEAPAC) consisting of much of the Pacific Islands, Australia, New Zealand, the Antarctic Coast, and so on. Several countries remained independent such as large portions of South America, most of the south of Africa, Israel, and portions of the Middle East.
